Holiday Survival: Will Power vs Discipline

What is the difference between will power and discipline. To me, will power is the burst of energy I get when I start something new. I can usually do well for a few hours, days or even a few weeks but when temptation is in my face over and over, I will eventually cave.

Discipline on the other had is a long term, consistent, structured plan. It is seeing the big picture and the immediate gratification is not as important AS WELL as I having a plan of action to handle the temptations that are in my face over and over.

So how do we get discipline:

  1. Start small. Set a small attainable goal such as log your food every day for 1 week or make your bed for 10 days.

  2. Set clear goals with an actionable plan of execution. Plan for the temptations and pitfalls and how to handle that.

  3. Remove the temptation.

  4. Eat Regularly and Healthily - this helps you feel good and prevents binges

  5. Be comfortable with the uncomfortable. This is out of your comfort zone - that is good.

  6. Schedule your rewards - just not food - for sticking to the discipline.

  7. Forgive your mistakes and move on. No sinking in guilt, blame and shame. Figure out what went wrong and do it differently next time.
