Carbohydrates - friend or foe?
Are all carbohydrates bad for you?
First, let me explain what is a carbohydrate. Any food that breaks down into sugars is considered a carbohydrate. With that being said, that includes a huge range of foods such as breads, chips, pasta, sauces, etc., as well as fruits and vegetables.
Carbohydrates are classified as simple or complex. Simple carbs break down very quickly and include regular sugar, candy, cakes, cookies, dairy, white bread and some fruit to name a few. These foods spike our blood sugar very quickly. Complex carbs, on the other hand, are broken down more slowly and contain a lot of fiber. These are also called starches. Vegetables, some fruit, whole grain rice, and other whole grain items fall into this category.
Carbohydrates got their bad name because of all of the processed foods out there. However, carbohydrates play a very important role in our body. It is our main source of fuel for physical activity, brain function as well as the operation of organs. Carbohydrates also play a huge role in our intestinal health and waste elimination. The real purpose to eating low carb is the elimination of all processed foods, not the whole foods such as fruits and vegetables. Keep eating those veggies!
